Seminar, Priya, Memories

02/25/2019

While we recognize cow protection as an important branch of our Krishna Conscious society, training and working with the oxen remains to many an ideal yet to be achieved. The 2019 European Ox Training Seminar will shed more light on this important, yet less practiced side of cow protection.

The seminar will teach participants the method of Voice Command, the gentlest and most loving way to train oxen. This method necessitates creating a personal relationship with the oxen and eliminates the use of violence and is, therefore, in line with the philosophy of cow protection.

The seminar will include both practical demonstrations of ox training by Voice Command as well as philosophical classes. The classes will be based on Srila Prabhupada’s instruction on cow protection and ox training which will help devotees understand the cow’s and bull’s spiritual personalities and the role they play in Krishna Consciousness.

Balabhadra Prabhu, initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1969, has over 30 years experience in cow protection and ox training. His USA non-profit organization, ISCOWP, has been caring for cows and oxen since 1990. It serves, not merely as one of USA’s main cow protection projects, but also as an educational center that teaches devotees and non-devotees alike about the importance of the cow and the bull and shows the world both their practical and spiritual values.

Balabhadra Prabhu also served as the ISKCON Global Minister of Cow Protection and Agriculture from 1998 until 2012 when he resigned due to health issues. Now that his health is better, he is once again able to travel and share his knowledge about cow protection.

Meet Priya the Ox, King of the Herd

On a cow protection farm all cows, bulls, and oxen are protected from slaughter. Each cow, in this case, ox, has his own unique personality. Meet Priya, the ox who is king of the ISCOWP herd.

Priya is a force to be reckoned with, at least for now. In this video, you can see how he has established himself as the king of the herd by defeating both Keshava, an older, bigger ox and Sri who is his brother. Although he has a tough persona, he also has a soft and gentle aspect to his personality. He loves alfalfa cubes and takes the cubes from Balabhadra carefully and he allows little 2-year-old Bhima to pet him while we know that he could plow down all the humans present if he wanted to. It seems that he has a steady girlfriend in Jahnava who takes any chance she has to lick Priya and associate with him. In the first clip of Priya receiving licks from Jahnava, it can be seen that Madhava is licking Priya also and the recently defeated Kesava is patiently waiting as Priya receives his recognition as king of the herd.

These cows and oxen all live at the International Society for Cow Protection, ISCOWP. Most members of the ISCOWP herd have been rescued from the meat and dairy industries. They will never be slaughtered, but they will be protected until their natural passing.

Memories of HDG Srila Prabhupada

HDG Srila Prabhupada, our spiritual master, inspired us to establish ISCOWP in 1990 to protect cows. Balabhadra das, William E.Dove, is the president of ISCOWP. He was the first person in Hawaii to be initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1970. In January ISKCON Hawaii held its 50th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada in Hawaii. During the event, there was a bus tour of all the historic locations of ISKCON Hawaii on Oahu, Hawaii. Here is a brief memory of Srila Prabhupada Balabhadra told the bus tour at the Ala Aoloa temple location.
